If the sound/music experience is one of the most interesting on earth, it is also one of the most subjective and personal ; when talk about audio and music, talking about feelings, of emotions, feelings (I like/I do not) : in short, not easily quantifiable things in technical terms...

The advent of digital technology has revolutionized not only the way of listening to music, it has also transformed the way to 'make' and distribute it. This provides significant improvements in many cases, but we must admit that for music lovers the recent decades had been disappointing...

The AudioFEEL ambition is to propose a new 'popular' and open format but with Hi-Fi quality by associating it with a 'solid-state' media type as SD memory card (Secure Digital), which has many advantages over optical media types: CD, SA-CD, DVD, Blu-ray...

Issues and Prospects

We are actually at an important moment in the history of music media: after the consecutive successes of vinyl and Compact Disc (that struggling to find a replacement), the current trend is the 'dematerialization' of the music...
While this may be suitable for 'nomad' or 'radio' use, this practice is not suitable for lovers of quality Sound (Hi-Fi) who want to enjoy high-level listening conditions for apreciate at fair value the musical performances from their favorite artists!
Moreover, even 'dematerialized' the titles should be stored somewhere: it will be in the 'cloud', ie on the servers of Internet giants fueled by coal; nice back return!?
"This is a revolution!" (1 full turn).
No need to explain the consequences in environmental/energy terms... AudioFEEL offers a concrete alternative to this vision 'futuristic'.

The purpose of the DA[SD] project is also the overall improvement of the objective audio quality : definition, dynamic, distortion, bandwidth, spatialisation... to let them express the Music !
Only formats of at least equal quality to the CD will be compatible:
DSD : 64 and 128 (.dsf)
PCM : min: 16 / 44.1 max: 24/192 (.flac)

And the current situation being what it is, several aspects should be taken into account :

• ‘post – CD’ time :
The CD’s time coming to end and a new economic model is to reinvent...
Currently there is a choice between a model completely dematerialized by internet ( download or streaming) and a classical distribution model of physical media : DVD-A, Pure Audio Blu-ray, (SD-ROM... ? )
But why not imagine a 'hybrid' model of HD download associated with a support ? : Some specialty sites already offer high-quality files "Studio-Masters" ...
So, it just copy these files .DSF or .FLAC on an SD-Flash card and we will have the equivalent of a CD 'engraved' but with the quality of a SA-CD or a DVD-A ( but without the mechanical / optical problems ) ...
The two models can indeed co-exist :
- download + flash memory (equivalent to the current CD-RW)
- physical medium with a ROM type memory (as CD pressed) + 'DA[SD]pack' ( custom/creative packaging )

For information, here is a comparison of the memory occupied according to various formats for classical music track about 10 minutes (to compare with the CD/WAV 16/44.1 format, which would be about 104MB) :

• End of the 'Loudness War' :
For several years, music lovers notice a quality loss of dynamic range. In fact, encouraged by listeners/consumers, some record labels/producers participated in a race to volume and the demand "I want my record sounds louder than other" has led to aberrations such as 'loudness war'.
There is currently a growing awareness of this problem and define/normalize the dynamics of musical recordings could be considered. Anyway, with measures of loudness EBU128/ITU embedded in the files, the 'Auto-Volume' function will allow the player [d-play] to automatically adjust the output gain so that the felt level is the same for all songs.
This is for homogenize the different levels of listening according on Audio-SD inserted: crush the dynamics of an album for 'louder sounding' will have no interest...
In an evolution perspective, we can also imagine an embedded processor that adjust the dynamics of records based on surrounding noise level.

• Local economy :
The limits of unbridled globalization begin to feel and an alternative economy is possible if consumers become actors...
Due to the use of easy and current technologies, the re-location of the entire music industry can be considered : from the producer (bands and musicians) to the consum'actor' (the listener) through all the intermediate steps ; for example, for local artists, a series of 'DA[SD]pack' can be produced locally in small numbers several times (at request).
The role of record stores (independent or not) can also be extended, for example by providing services and personalized/tailored advices.
The 'DA[SD]pack' are preferably recycled cardboard (more ecological) and will be highly customizable, from an environment-friendly local production (ecological ink printers).

2014 will be the year of the High-Definition audio in DA[SD] ?... the choice is yours !...
